Rio De Janeiro, Brazil - Last stop for us !!

...And so to our final journey....And what a journey it was!
We travelled 5000 Kms (2.5 days) to get here from Lima. We were hoping that Rio was going to be worth the effort. As it happens, it was!!!
Rio De Janeiro amazed us every day with its beautiful beaches (all 90kms of them), lush mountains, cable car, Jesus statue and aeroplane spotting.....also the heat here is punishing peaking at 36+ degs every day whilst we were here.
We write this blog 1 hour before we catch a taxi to the airport for our last flight back to London.

Somewhere over the northern Argentinian saltlakes on LAN....after travelling through silimar terrain by 4WD in Bolivia, it was nice to see it from the air.

Our bus route from Buenos Aires to Rio.

It got really hot somewhere along the way...this, the temperature in Foz De Iguazu, southern Brazil as we travelled through.

Pretty stormy along the way as well.

Our first impressions of Rio. We took an evening stroll along our local beach upon arrival....wow, what a place!

Christ the Redeemer statue dominates the skyline here.

This was our spot at Copacabana. When its this hot on the weekend everyone hits the beach. We've never seen such a crowded shoreline.

Suvi's in there somewhere!

Stylin'!

Our local beach, Flamengo. Sugar Loaf mountain (of James Bond fame) in the background.

Cycling through the palm trees on our way to the cable car.

Suvi sweating in the distance.

Sugar Loaf time.....sooo hot!

Wondering how Jaws made the jump from one car to another???

Famous piece of movie memorabilia from the film Moonraker......smart!

Back abit!!

I got a sniff of the local airport and got excited!

Savage!

Whilst I was plane spotting (cough cough) Suvi photographed the wildlife on Sugar Loaf.

Copacabana sunset!

Wow....what a city!

Christ!

Redeeming feature of Rio....we had to go!

Great vista's from 710m.

Everyone else was busy 'snapping' the front, so we went to the rear :-)
Arguably, my better side :-)

Our favourite beach in Rio, Ipanema. Finnish mermaid!

The mermaid grew legs at sunset!
Rio....what a place!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year, Lima, Peru

Just a short hop by South American standards (8 hours by bus) and we were back in Lima preparing for our New Year party at the beach.
Our beach house, 120kms south of Lima, on a stretch of private sand and overlooked by guard towers, was fantastic - Thanks Caterina for inviting us and organising rental etc.
After the party we returned to central Lima for a couple more days of sight seeing and shopping before commencing our epic journey to Rio De Janeiro via Buenos Aires.

First things first - supermarket visit! Left to right - Suvi and I, Javier, Moni, Cat, Peter, Laurent & Cat's Dad.

My new job as corn seller.

Mojito practise.

Kukkuu.....
The Peruvian's NY colour is yellow, even the underwear....we decorated the beach house with steamers and balloons.

Preparing to pop the corks at the stroke of mid-night.
Left to right - Rafael, me, Laurent, Peter & Cat's demanding hand :-)

Official time keepers - Jeroen and Cat.

Who is that handsome chap in my firework shot??

Toasting 11 months & 2 weeks of travel....not long to go!

A good one of the cute couple.

We even had our own 'Harley Davidson' for stylish beach transport.

Suvi breaking the speed limit....NOT!

Coming back from the shop - One of my most manly moments of the travel trip!

....and another.

'Hotties' on the veranda....
Moni, Fiorella, Miriam & Suvi.

Our patch of N.Y sand from the cliff top path....

....a great vantage point for dolphin spotting. These guys passed several times every day :-)

A lucky shot....whats that lurking inside the wave????

Our beach house modelled by Suvi...we even had plastic flamingoes in the garden.

Our only sunset in 3 days, the weather was pretty cloudy ....we headed out with the camera for these pic's...

....pounding Pacific at sunset.

Back in central Lima at the Espana Hostel surrounded by parrots, cat, dog and hungry tortoise.

Plaza De Armas, Lima.....

....Xmas decorations at the Plaza.

A reminder that poverty is never far away...one of Lima's favella's.
