North of the South, N.Z

OK - final installment from top the South Island, NZ. We have now driven a final 500 km of the south island up to Picton from where we caught the Interislander ferry to Wellington, north island.

...everywhere, sheep.

Warm sunshine at last - ski lodge at Lynton, after 10 cm overnight snow on the slopes above - it was difficult not to hire a snowboard at this moment. We settled for coffee.

Photogenic sheep somewhere above Kaikoura.

Spectacular scenes from the alpine pacific triangle touring route.

Warm in the valley, cold on the peaks.

See the 782 black dots on the rocks? They're fur seals...

...here is a close up of these lazy 'blubbers'.

Our very own cottage in Kaikoura with its own garden....

....spectacular mountain view....

...and gas BBQ :-)

Kaikoura Peninsula - pics from our evening walk...

3 seconds later I electrocuted myself on the fence to my right....was really shocking!

...just a good one so its in. (Mum, Dad - me on the left)

...as is this one.

mooo

Hey...we paid good money to see you....get back here!

We saw 4 Sperm whales on our tip...amazing!

...here's number 4 in Kaikoura town center :-)

Finally reached Picton in the far north of the south island.

More road blocks...this time cattle.

somewhere in Queen charlotte sound....good pic hun!

Suvi in happy place at Malborough wine region....Hunter Vinyard sampling wine...Dad seems in a hurry to taste this one.

Picton in the afternoon sunshine.

...here comes our ride....

Suvi on the bow looking warm.

Bye bye South Island :-)

Central South Island, NZ

We have now driven another 1200km since last entry - Te Anau, via Wanaka & Haast Pass (with deviation to remote Jackson Bay), to Greymouth then over spectacular Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch - where we are now.

At Kingston - southern shore of Lake Wakatipu.

Mum and Dad with the Kingston Flyer.

Our latest mountain climb to Mount Iron above Wanaka.

Sunshine at the Northen end of Lake Wanaka.

Quirky Paradiso Cinema in Wanaka where we relaxed on sofas, drank beer, ate cookies and learned all about 'arsewitz' bleaching whilst watching Bruno.

Next morning - gloom lifts momentarily over Lake Hawea.

Rain forest walk - Haast Pass.

NZ's highest peak - Mount Cook 3755m.

Massive detour well worth it at Jackson Bay with the dolpins.

Sand flies were pretty annoying here :-(

We drove 50kms to the fish and chip shop only to find it closed......still the scenic drive was well worth it.

My fav pic of the day :-) - Suvi on the beach dodging sand flies and scaring the gulls.

Our typical view.

Fox in the early evening.

Our most scenic shot - Lake Matheson with Mount Cook's reflection.....

....taken in the gift shop from a poster.......heres what we saw :-)

More rainforest walks - this time in our circumnavigation of Lake Matheson.

Hello Tarzan! Have always wanted to swing on vines.

Road side detour.

Fox Glacier in the gloom. Some overly protective 'owners' of the route didn't let us any closer without paying 50eur.

Fluffy goat for lunch!

Regression!

We caught Greymouth at a good moment here.

Strike a pose!

Lake Brunner mirror.

More dad porn...they actually have the occasional train pass through in NZ - this the Trans Alpine express travelling between Greymouth and Christchurch over Arthur's Pass. We risked death to stop and take this pic... crazy train spotter Carters.

Parrot paparazzi.

Nice bridge ai?

Woooow!

Captain Cook's new purpose of life as a birdyloo.

No more beer for the photographer.

Caught between a rock and a hard place.
