Arequipa and around.

Colonial Arequipa, 'white city', was our favourite Peruvian city so far. Overlooked by two gigantic volcanoes, Misti (5822m) and Chachani (6075m), there is soooo much to do in the surrounding area....hence staying 7 days in the city ( 10 in the area ).
Teaming up with Eddie and Georgina once again, the bullfighting and white water rafting were a must!

A reminder that Xmas is just around the corner. This guy has been selling chocolates to motorists right outside our hostel since we arrived here. Annoying when he keeps you awake at night from constant shouting :-(

A trip to the markets is a must...fruit and vegetables soooo cheap.....

...as well as the local meats! Decided not to buy at this market stall though! Someone had already bought the brain :-(

Colonial heart of Arequipa at sunset....Volcan Chachani towering over the square 50km to the north. We would later stand proudly on top of this peak.

Taxi!

Arequipa has to be the easiest place to hail a taxi we've ever been to!

More volcanic peaks loom in the backgroud at sunset.

La Merced in rush hour....our home for 7 nights!

Our roof top terrace at Los Andes B&B...great views of Volcan Misti.

Sunday is bullfighting day at Arequipa....we joined the screaming masses at a local stadium ( over looked by Chachani volcano ) to find out what it was all about.

Am not sure that the bulls really wanted to fight each other. At least there were no matadors grabbing the limelight. Sometimes blooded, the locals treated both winning and loosing bulls as heroes.

Preparing to run the Rio Chili, local river ( Grade 3 )

Left to right - me, Georgina, Suvi & Eddie - paddles at the ready.

High 5!
